Don’t say “Go”, but “Let’s Go”
Millennials must be lead, instead of managed and given autonomy to complete their tasks, so that they may grow and reach their full potential.
Paradoxically enough, growing organizations require management and most of people and especially millennials hate to be managed. This is a real problem for what we call managers. Indeed, Generation Y represents more than 50% of the current global workforce and most of the companies and businesses still use traditional way to manage people. And precisely, the way millenials grow up and want to work do not match the expectations of the traditional workplace : people have more than one specialization, they do not have just one employer, they tend to travel and to move more than the previous generation, they do not need a traditional office but only wi-fi. The problem is that those people are managed as people used to be in factories. They are given tasks to do, and that’s it.
This is the very reason why we need a new managerial contract as the existing way to manage makes no sense for start-up, creative agencies, think tanks, creative entrepreneurial work… . People prefer keep traditional way to manage because tradition is easy, comforting but tradition stifles innovation. What can we do to change this ? What should leaders change? Here are some answers.
First, managers, CEO, boss.. should provide their team with their areas of responsibility. Employees have their goals, deadlines. As a boss, you should also assume that they will do good work and that they are here for the good reasons. The, you should provide spaces. The employees can work wherever they want, as long as the work is getting done on time and with the right goals. Employees should not be expected physically at the office. Indeed, leaders, CEO etc are here to guide their employees, to provide them with advices and regular follow-up. Creating a work that is conducive to doing excellent work is essential too. What happens then ? What are the consequences of all those shifts ?
People will be more creative and they will discover fulfillment at work.Young leaders have to break to circle of what has always been done and provide new way to lead teams.
“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.” wrote Antoine De Saint-Exupéry. Before demanding the best of your employees, bring out the best of yourself and give it to them. Don’t stay beyond your team and say “Go”, stay in front of them and say “Let’s go”.
A great leader provide your team with time, space and resources, audacious projects… .
People should end of management and better focus on leadership.
Leader are not just manager. They are mentors, comrade, a resource, coach.
Don’t manage, but lead because you manage things and you lead people. Leaders motivate and empower their team to win a championship and then take a step back and watch them do it. And you ? What will you do ?
